21 Day Fix

21 Day Fix is a fitness program that helps people achieve their fitness goals by improving their nutrition and exercise routine. People can track their meals and workout plan through the iOS app and stay accountable each day. However, the current navigation doesn't help new users understand where to start. While returning users have challenges going back and forth between the main screen and the desired task. My recommendations for improving the next version of the app focuses on refining the information architecture and UI elements.
Challenge 1: "Tell me where to Start?"
A quick guerrilla usability test revealed that a first time user faces confusion on what's important. The hierarchy of options between "rating the app," "Introduction" and "21 Day Tracker" compete for the user's attention.
Challenge 2: "How many programs are available?"
People in the study were not able to identify the option available to them. People with busy schedules don't have to commit to the 21 Day program. While people who want more challenges, have the option to take an extreme version (Program 2).
Information Architecture: Less is More
The current set up does not help the user feel confident tracking his progress. The overlaps create an opportunity to simplify the navigation so he can get to his tasks more quickly. Below are some of the options I explored by using a job stories framework by Alan Klement.
When a new user is ready to start his fitness transformation, he wants to be able to get information on each program so he can figure out what’s the best option for him
I explored giving the user the same function but with clear affordances, however this solution still did not solve for challenge 2.
The next option presented a clear navigation that influence the final output. Through there were areas to fine tune around how to best display the programs for the user and also provide a brief description.
This final solution help both types of users navigate the app more easily. Each element has a hierarchy and a purpose for helping people stay accountable in their fitness journey.
Better Navigation with Active Verbs in Headers
Small changes and reviewing the fundamentals of what the user is trying to accomplish in the app can make a big impact in helping users find what they need more quickly. (Especially when inputting information into an app) People will get lazy at some point if there are multiple steps to one task. The next step, I would explore in the redesign of this app is incentives to motivate people beyond just tracking: How can we make this into an interactive experience where people are finding motivation from others and also from their own progress?
Empowering people to make better health care decisions by providing price transparency for complex procedures
Helping people become aware of their posture to prevent injuries and back pain
Reducing the friction with technology to help admin staff create better relationships with customers at gyms
